This Sundance Alley proposal may have happened on one of the hottest afternoons of the Texas summer, but that didn’t stop it from being incredibly sweet. With a thoughtful setup hidden away in the alley, plenty of happy tears, and the sound of World Cup crowds cheering nearby, Mark pulled off the perfect surprise for Rey.
A Sundance Alley Proposal Hidden in Downtown
One of my favorite things about photographing proposals is seeing all the little details that make each one unique.
Mark had been planning this moment for quite some time. With the help of his mom and sister, he transformed a quiet corner of Sundance Alley into the sweetest proposal spot. Fairy lights, faux candles, flower petals, and marquee letters spelling out “M & R” made the space feel intimate. Just around the corner, cheers from World Cup fans echoed throughout downtown Fort Worth.
While crowds filled Sundance Square to watch the World Cup, this little corner belonged entirely to Mark and Rey. As with most surprise proposals, my job before the proposal mostly involved pretending I wasn’t there.
I tucked myself behind a large tree near the proposal spot with my camera ready. My task was simple: make sure Rey never noticed I was there.
I watched them walk into the alley, and without needing any secret signals or dramatic cues, I simply followed the moment as it naturally happened. Then Mark got down on one knee.
The Sweetest Surprise
The second Rey realized what was happening, she burst into happy tears and wrapped Mark in the biggest hug. There were happy tears, big smiles, and whoooole lot of excitement!
Those are the moments I live for as a photographer because nothing about them can be recreated. They’re completely genuine, completely unscripted, and full of emotion. 🥹
As someone who’s photographed quite a few surprise proposals now, it’s still one of my favorite things to witness. Every couple reacts differently, but the joy is always the same.
Celebrating Around Sundance Square
After the proposal, we spent the rest of the evening wandering around Sundance Square for their engagement photos: we stopped at the ever beautiful Sundance Pavilion, made our way over for a fun dip kiss in front of the iconic disco cowboy hat, and explored the art deco buildings nearby for even more portraits.
Even though it was incredibly hot outside, these two made it look effortless. They were completely wrapped up in each other, smiling the entire time and basking in the joy of being newly engaged.
One little detail that made me smile throughout the session? Mark is a huge Star Wars fan, and I couldn’t help but think it was pretty adorable that the woman he was proposing to happened to be named Rey.
