Fort Worth Botanic Garden Proposal | Cassie + Cass’s Surprise Engagement in the Japanese Garden

Man and woman embracing at the Fort Worth Botanic Garden

This Fort Worth Botanic Garden proposal was one of those moments that reminded me exactly why I love photographing surprise engagements. Between the happy tears, the gorgeous scenery, and the excitement on both of their faces, everything came together in the sweetest way – even on one of the hottest afternoons Texas could throw at us!

A Surprise Months in the Making

When Cass reached out after finding me on Instagram, he already had a vision in mind.

He told me he wanted to propose in the Japanese Garden at the Fort Worth Botanic Garden because of how much Cassie loved it. She had mentioned before just how beautiful it was, and since the two of them love traveling together – with Japan sitting at the very top of their travel bucket list – it couldn’t have been a more meaningful place to start the next chapter of their lives.

Hearing that I was his first choice to photograph such an important moment honestly gave me all the warm fuzzies. 🥰

Hiding Behind the Trees

Proposal photography is equal parts documenting emotions and secretly pretending you’re not there.

We had everything planned ahead of time and agreed to meet near the iconic wooden bridge in the Japanese Garden. I found my hiding spot behind a cluster of trees and waited, trying my best to look completely inconspicuous while keeping my camera ready.

As they walked onto the bridge, Cass glanced over, found me hiding; The second we made eye contact, I watched him begin to get down on one knee.

That’s when I stepped out from behind the trees and started photographing from a distance, making sure Cassie could stay completely wrapped up in the moment before she even realized I was there.

Happy Tears in the Japanese Garden

The reaction was exactly what you’d hope for: happy tears, big smiles, and a whole lot of excitement!

Those are the moments you simply can’t recreate, and they’re always my favorite part of photographing proposals. Everything happening in front of my camera is completely genuine, and every emotion is unfolding in real time.

Watching Cassie realize what was happening and seeing the excitement on both of their faces made the Texas’ heat completely worth it.

Exploring the Fort Worth Botanic Garden Together

After the proposal, we slowed things down and turned the afternoon into a full engagement session.

We wandered through the peaceful paths of the Japanese Garden before exploring the rest of the Fort Worth Botanic Garden together. Even though it was sunny, hot, and more than a little muggy, these two never stopped smiling.

Cassie and Cass are the kind of couple who simply enjoy being together. They’re adventurous, a little nerdy, and incredibly sweet with one another. Those are always my favorite couples to photograph because they don’t need elaborate posing or big productions, they just need a little direction and permission to be themselves.

More Than Just a Beautiful Proposal Location

The Japanese Garden is already one of my favorite places for engagement sessions and proposals, but knowing the location held genuine meaning for these two made it even more special.

Sometimes the perfect proposal spot isn’t just the prettiest place – it’s the place that already holds a little piece of your story.
